Once you have got an email account, try to get a very useful service of forwarding. This will give you a new unique address independent from your actual current mailbox. When you will need to change ISP (which will also make you loosing your: something@something.else) the "forwarding address" will be still with you. You would only need to update a configuration to have messages coming directly to a new account. In the same way you can get "URL forwarding" (personally I have it: "www.Christ.com/Dudzic" ÈÈÈ "members.tripod.com/~dudzic") but these services come usually with a small fee.

Almost everybody on the free side of the net dreams to have own domain name (www.yourname.org). To obtain it you need first to pay to your ISP for doing the actual registration procedure (in a fact there are places on the Web where some folks are really nice and doing it for free). But the most important thing is that you need to pay to InterNIC USD 100 for first 2 years of that service (some source say that this fee is going to be put down up to 70 USD)
Now you do not need it. You can use a service called "URL Redirector": it is very similar to an email forwarding service. You get a name but that is not a real account. Your Site needs to be located somewhere else but you can use the "new address" in promotion. Instead of having: www.something.com/something/yourname/index.html you can have for example: www.yourname.home.ml.org
